When in doubt, smile. One of my mentor teachers from this fall was notable for her ability to cultivate a peaceful, productive, cooperative classroom. My dyad partner and I loved spending time in this classroom, and we sensed that even first period the eighth graders were happy to be there. One constant in this classroom was the teacher's smiling demeanor.
I think of "KJ" when I am holding up my hand in a quiet signal that I am ready for the students' attention, and I try to pair my waiting hand with a genuine smile. In fact, I try to smile as often during the day as I can. Smiling can temper most trying situations, of which every day is certain to have its share. If it lifts my mood, and hopefully that of my students, then it is a good thing.
